The world revolves around the public eye. Whatever the public feels, it is. Lady Gaga has become one of the most controversial women in the world, from wearing a meat dress entirely made of raw meat to the 2010 Video Music Awards. Walking around in 20 inch platforms to the airport, but has her controversial image gone too far? In late 2010, Lady Gaga wore a gun bra on the cover of Rolling Stones and in her music video for “Alejandro”. When the Sandy Hooks Tragedy stuck, the public accused Lady Gaga of being “tasteless” due to the fact she began to wear the bra again. The media misinterpret things which causes them to make unnecessary assumptions.
On April 27th 2012, Lady Gaga kicked of her Born This Way Ball Tour full of risqué costumes custom made by Versace, Giorgio Armani and her friends called The Haus Of Gaga. The outfits were created to go along with her catchy songs. However, the one outfit that seemed to catch the eyes of everyone was her gun bra, a gun brassiere that she wears during her song, “Alejandro”. Sarah Flanigan of Yahoo states, “She donned a similar get-up in the video for her song “Alejandro’. Why does it stick out so much? Flanigan continues ,with the recent elementary school shooting in Newton, Connecticut, it feels like the “Born This Way” singer has taken her wild wardrobe a step too far this time.” Lady Gaga donned the gun bra without knowing the sensitivity of the world, after the shooting. Lady Gaga is under the gun of this controversy is that people are misinterpreting her outfits for something bigger.
The Sandy Hooks tragedy was a shooting that happened in the Sandy Hooks Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut on December 14th, 2012. Adam Lanza killed 26 kids attending the school, his mother and himself. People began to ask why was Lady Gaga wearing the gun bra after the tragedy struck. Articles blasted with the same question. Nancy Irwin of FOX News concurred that the costume is indeed senseless and rude. “She is famous for her outrageousness and controversy, not for being sensitive to heartbroken parents and those who are traumatized,” Irwin noted. “Sometimes costumes cross the line from harmless to harmful.” But its not to harm the sensitive to heartbroken parents. It’s for her and her own pleasure of expressing herself. Also, Tom McKay of PolicyMic.com stated “Lady Gaga’s decision to don a gun-toting brassiere undoubtedly with full awareness of its disturbing implications is tasteless and inappropriate,” Lady Gaga has worn the gun bra at numerous occasions. The media has conjured up this image that Lady Gaga is wearing the gun bra to harm the people people who have been affected by the massacre in Newton.
The problem isn’t the fact that she’s wearing a gun bra, the problem is that people want to start noticing her and want to stir up controversy and make assumptions of her opinion. Lady Gaga fans know how deeply she believes in doing good and contributing to the need and trying to change the world. But this controversy hasn’t put her on the nice list. “I suppose when you haven’t enough talent to keep people’s attention, you get a gun bra,” Rapper Reggie P wrote tweeted. This shows that the media’s assumption has caused the world to believe that Lady Gaga is wearing the bra for such disgusting reasons, which aren't true. After being tried of being bashed by the interpretations of the media, Lady Gaga then cut the gun bra out of her performance when she began her US leg of her tour to not affect the sensitivity to those who lost someone in the shooting or even the people affected by the incident.
As a democracy, we continue to talk about how we all should be independent about our opinions but yet we let this one mass media view affect our ideas and what everything comes down to.
